Soumitra Chatterjee

Renowned Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee was born on 19th January 1935. Starting his career with playing the role of the adult Apu in Satyajit Ray’s Apur Sansar (1959), his association with Satyajit Ray is noted. His acclaimed films with Ray include Devi (1960), Abhijaan (1962), Charulata (1964), Aranyer Din Ratri (1969), Sonar Kella (1974) and Ganashatru (1989). His diverse filmography with other acclaimed makers includes films like Kshudista Pashan (1960), Akash Kusum (1965), Teen Bhubhaner Parey (1969), Nauka Dubi (1979) and Kony (1984).

Often cited for his resemblance to the young Tagore, Chatterjee occupies a special place in Bengali cinema for his staggering versatility. He is also an acclaimed stage actor and director and a poet.
