Porayathu Leela

A veteran singer in Indian cinema, P. Leela was born on 19th May 1934. Trained in Carnatic music, from the mid-40s, she was successfully active for more than four decades working across languages in south Indian cinema. Leela rendered her voice for thousands of songs collaborating with leading music composers of the era.
Posthumously in 2006, Leela was honoured with Padma Bhushan Award.

This interview was conducted by Randor Guy on May 29th, 1989 at P. Leela’s residence at Raja Annamalai Puram in Madras while she was 55.
Madabhushi Rangadorai, fondly known as Randor Guy is a well-known author, columnist and film historian, and also a lawyer by profession. He has written books like “Memories of Madras: Its Movies, Musicians & Men of Letters”, “A History of Tamil Cinema”, “Starlight, Starbright: The Early Tamil Cinema”. Guy has also written fiction novels like “Chaya” and “Kasi”.
