S. D. Subbulakshmi

Srivaikundam Duraisamy Subbulakshmi was a renowned star from the early talkies era in Tamil Cinema. Trained in Carnatic music and dance, she started her career as a child artist. Before stepping into the films, she was an established theatre artist. K. Subramanyam’s mythical romance drama #Pavalakkodi (1934) marked her debut into the films starring alongside M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar. The film was based on the play of same name featuring same leading pair, Subbulakshmi rose to the fame with the success of this film.

Interestingly, she is often credited for introducing legendary Singer M.S. Subbulakshmi to the Tamil cinema, the first musician to receive the #BharatRatna Award.

Madabhushi Rangadorai, fondly known as Randor Guy is a well-known author, columnist and film historian, and also a lawyer by profession. He has written books like “Memories of Madras: Its Movies, Musicians & Men of Letters”, “A History of Tamil Cinema”, “Starlight, Starbright: The Early Tamil Cinema”. Guy has also written fiction novels like “Chaya” and “Kasi”.
