Chandrakant Gokhale

Prominent thespian Chandrakant Gokhale was born on 7th January 1921, into the family associated with the films and theatre. His mother Kamlabai Gokhale and grandmother Durgabai Kamat were one of the first female actresses in Indian cinema.

Beginning with featuring in musical plays in the late 1930s, he worked in films, theatre and television for seven decades. During his illustrious career, he acted in noted Marathi and Hindi films like Sadhi Manse (1965), Raigadacha Rajbandi (1965), Suhaag Raat (1968) and Prem (1995) and in some of the iconic plays like Natsamrat, BhavBandhan and Purush.

This interview was conducted by Bapu Watve on 21st April 2005 while Chandrakant Gokhale was 84.

Bapu Watve was a renowned author on subjects relating to cinema, and studious researcher. He is known for books like “Ek Hoti Prabhat Nagari”, “Bhartiya Charitramala: Dadasaheb Phalke” and “Bhartiya Cinemache Janak”.
