Suryakant Mandhare

A well-known artist in Marathi cinema and theatre, Surykant Mandhre was born on 2 nd June 1926 at Kolhapur. Started acting in films at the young age of 12, he was active in the film industry for almost five decades. Suryakant made his significant name with his wide range of performances, especially with his rustic and strong body language and typical rural tone of dialogue delivery.

He was actively associated with celebrated Marathi filmmakers like Bhalji Pendharkar, Anant mane, Datta Mane, Gajanan Jagirdar and Raja Paranjpe among others. His on-screen chemistry with Jayshree Gadkar was highly appreciated. Some of his notable films are Ketakichya Banaat (1950), Sangtye Aika (1959), Kanyadaan (1960), Sadhi Manse (1965) and Malhari Martand (1965).

This interview was conducted by Bapu Watve on 11th May 1987 while Suryakant Mandhare was 61.

Bapu Watve was a renowned author on subjects relating to cinema, and studious researcher. He is known for books like “EkHoti Prabhat Nagari”, “Bhartiya Charitramala: Dadasaheb Phalke” and “Bhartiya Cinemache Janak”.
